HD, LA and XP

Distributing Level Adjustment and Racial Hit Dice

Although all defined player races in this setting have either 0 or 1 LA and no racial hit dice, I thought I should define how to apply arbitrary levels of both.

To my knowledge, Wizards has not established an official means of using Level Adjustment and Racial Hit Dice in a gestalt character. Various methods have been used, such as putting HD and LA both on the same side of gestalt while taking class levels on the other side, putting HD on one side and LA on the other and having level adjustment and racial hit dice apply to both sides of the gestalt. In this setting, the method will be to spread the level adjustment and racial hit dice across both sides evenly.

For example, a Doppelganger (4 LA, 4 HD) would look like:
LA\\LA
LA\\LA
HD\\HD
HD\\HD
class level\\class level

and could not start before ECL 5.

A Gargoyle (5LA, 4HD) would look like:
LA\\LA
LA\\LA
LA\\HD
HD\\HD
HDl\\class level

and could also not start before ECL 5.

This is my attempt not allow 'break the monster' type builds that occur when LA and HD are applied to the same side while not overly penalizing non-standard creatures as can happen when they apply to both sides.

Level Adjustment Buyoff

Whether level adjustment buyoff will be allowed in any given campaign will obviously be up to whatever DM is running the campaign, but, since LA buyoff is another element of the game that has, to my knowledge, not been defined for gestalt characters, I feel the need to write up my plan for those rules as well.

Given the distribution of LA and HD as defined above, one can use a system of LA buyoff very similar to that used by normal characters. For reference, that method is:

Once the total of a character's class levels (not including any Hit Dice from his creature type or his level adjustment) reaches three times his level adjustment, his level adjustment is eligible to be decreased by 1.

Each time a character's level adjustment is eligible to be reduced, the character may pay an XP cost to take advantage of the reduction. The character must pay an amount of XP equal to (his current ECL -1) × 1,000. This amount is immediately deducted from the character's XP total. The deduction should reduce the character's effective character level (ECL) by 1.

This method is largely unchanged for gestalt characters, but some definitions must be clarified:

  • a gestalt level is only a class level if both sides of the gestalt are class levels
  • a gestalt level is a Hit Dice if either side of the gestalt is a Hit Dice
  • a gestalt level is Level Adjustment if both sides of the gestalt are Level Adjustment

So, the Doppelganger above would be eligible for buyoff as a normal character with 2 LA and 2 Hit Dice (eligible for buyoff at ECL 10 and ECL 12) and the Gargoyle would be eligible as a normal character with 2 LA and 3 Hit Dice (eligible for buyoff at ECL 11 and ECL 13).
